Obedience Classes For Puppies
Do you want your German Shepherd to heel with precision, sit motionlessly or stay on command? German Shepherd puppy obedience training gives you the ability to instruct your dog verbally rather than by force. As a result of obedience classes, you will also be able to end your puppys undesirable behaviors like biting and barking. You can attend an obedience course in person or do your training at home with a training DVD.
You can see that these outcomes depend on you. How you act will change your puppy’s behavior. Your pets genetic makeup is important also, but you are the key to success.
There are specific training phrases you need to learn to train your puppy. You need to use the same instruction each time if you want consistent behavior. Your pet will learn to respond to simple commands. Treats are a good motivator.
Besides using the same directions each time, you must learn to correct inappropriate behavior. With young puppies, correction is just repeating the instruction. Withholding a reward can be correction enough. Do not be aggressive when teaching a pup in obedience.
This is what your German Shepherd puppy will learn from obedience training. You can start basic obedience training as soon as your dog is weaned. Your dog can learn the following commands as young as eight weeks.
“Focus” – Pay attention to you
“Sit” – Sit and watch the trainer
“Stand” – All four paws on the ground
“Stay” – Being still for short periods
“Down” – Belly on the ground and head upright
“Come” – Move directly to you
“OK” – Relax
“No” – Break off whatever it was doing and pay attention
This is a lot to learn so you should not try to teach your pup all these obedience skills quickly. Teach your dog a couple of commands at a time. Just master each command before teaching more.
When your puppy responds appropriately to your instructions, continue to teach it some more. These commands are more complicated to train. It will be faster and easier if you get guidance on how to teach these skills to your puppy.
* “Go” – Go where you point
* “Stop” – Stop moving
* “Off” – Jump down
* “Back” – Step backwards
* “Heel” – Refers to the position both prior to and while walking with the trainer
The following commands are helpful for puppy potty training or crate training, or when you are fixing problem behavior such as puppy chewing or nipping.
* “Potty” – This is where and when it should go to the bathroom
* “Kennel up” – Get in the crate
* “Gentle” – Pick up something in its mouth without biting the person offering it
* “No bite” – Do not bite
* “Drop” – Release the object that is in its mouth
* “Leave it” – Ignore an object that the dog is moving toward
German Shepherd puppies can continue to learn new skills. Puppies are naturally active and curious, and they enjoy the attention you give them when training. You can go beyond obedience training your dog. Your pet can learn tricks like pretending to be dead, singing, and many more behaviors. If you are deliberate about obedience training a puppy, your pet will be happy and stimulated, and you can be proud of your well trained pup.
